More than Memorabilia

When we think of gaming, we think of the immediate rush of excitement that the game provides. We think of the graphics, the rules, the risks and the possible outcomes. What we barely ever think of is if this game that we love to play will one day be worth something significant.

There is an entire world of auctioning, swapping, collecting and selling memorabilia from an array of themes and games, that makes this practice a rather pricey one.

We’ve found five games that have some of the most collectable and memorable memorabilia out there:

Monopoly

Everyone, at some point in their lives, has played the game Monopoly. This classic board game has provided hours and hours of entertainment for decades. The pieces to this game are well known and rather recognizable amongst every generation. Who can’t recognise the well-known top hat, the thimble, the battleship, the shoe (to name a few). Older versions of this game, along with original pieces of the board game are highly sought after in the world of collectors.

The earliest ever version of the board game Monopoly, made in 1933 by Charles Darrow, has sold for a whopping £90,000 with auction house Sotheby's. This game is the only one of the 5 000 made to have survived.

Pokémon

The Pokémon franchise was born in 1990. It began as video games designed for the original Game Boy. Since then, Pokémon has expanded into collectable trading cards, TV shows, movies, comic books, video games and toys. Interestingly enough, Pokémon is the second best-selling video game franchise in the world.

With such a large fan-base, it’s no wonder that memorabilia of the Pokémon franchise is so popular.

Bingo

Bingo is one of the world’s most popular games. As a game that is said to have originated in 1530 in Italy as a form of lottery game, bingo has evolved to become a universally loved game. Well-known selling sites, such as eBay, have ‘antique’ bingo memorabilia available for auction or purchase. These include vintage bingo cards, bingo tickets, balls and wooden cards.

Bingo is still one of the most popular forms of entertainment. Nowadays, bingo lovers can enjoy playing bingo games either online or with friends at bingo tournaments. Modern day design websites such as Etsy, have created new memorabilia inspired by bingo.

Sports

Baseball cards are the world’s most traded sports memorabilia. The traditional cards have celebrated America’s most favourite sporting heroes for decades. There are tons of valuable cards out there, but the most valuable sports card is of Honus Wagner from the 1909-1911 American Tobacco Company set. Only 200 cards were ever made, as Wagner did not want to glorify tobacco to his young fans.

Lego

Lego, the world’s most powerful brand (yes, it overtook Ferrari for the number 1 spot!) has been an all-time favourite game for decades, since 1932 - to be exact. This worldwide success has provided the public with many memorable memorabilia. Recently, lego awarded a 14 carat lego brick to employees who have been with the company for 25 years or longer.

These solid gold lego bricks are selling for a whopping £12,000.

What can we say? Everything is awesome for lego lovers and for those who collect promising memorabilia.
